Taxes can significantly change the returns investors actually keep. FD interest is taxed at the applicable slab rate, while qualifying equity gains receive different tax treatment based on the holding period. REIT payouts can include dividends, interest and other components, each taxed differently. A proposed 2026 amendment could exempt the dividend component of certain REIT and InvIT distributions, even when the underlying special purpose vehicle uses the new tax regime. Ultimately, investors are advised to compare post-tax returns, not just headline returns.
